| Once the cadet has completed 8 hours training they will have completed a Gliding Scholarship and will be eligible to wear the Gliding Scholarship Wings. The wings are Dark Blue in colour with GS in the centre. |
 |
| If a senior instructor at the VGS considers that the cadet is capable of going solo within another 2 hours of flying training, the cadet continues their training. |
 |
| The cadet will if they reach the required standard, fly solo. An A Category Instructor sends the Cadet solo to fly one circuit. After a successful circuit and landing, they are awarded a Gliding Scholarship Solo Standard. The cadet is entitled to wear a set of Wings that are coloured silver with S in the centre.
Unlike some VGS units, we do not do "Ghost" solos. Every solo sent by 613VGS is a genuine solo - "On your Own"

On Saturday 19th May 2001 saw our first day of flying when we sent four Cadets Solo, three first solos and one first solo on type. All completed successfully.
